2010: Chevrolet Volt Technology Testing

General Motors is working hard to meet its goal of having the Chevy Volt, its first plug-in electric hybrid, ready for the road in 2010 — a short three years after the concept was revealed at the North American International Auto Show.
While it's not unusual for the industry to develop an all-new car in 36 months, the Volt represents a special challenge because of its plug-in hybrid powerplant. Conceived as part of GM's new E-Flex architecture, the Volt will be the first of a new generation of vehicles that are electrically and not mechanically driven.
The heart of the Volt is a 160-horsepower electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack that has an electric-only range of 40 miles. That means for short hops, the Volt, which can take a plug-in overnight charging, can be driven without using its turbocharged 1.0-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine. Once the pure electric range has been exhausted, the engine kicks in to recharge the batteries and drive the car through its electric motor.

The Volt is claimed to deliver 0–60 mph acceleration of 8 to 8.5 seconds while delivering an equivalent of 100 mpg in its hybrid mode over an 80-mile daily-use cycle. The car will also feature a metal space-frame chassis covered with composite body panels. GM has initially set a target base price of around $30,000.

The Volt will also be one of the first plug-in hybrids offered from a major manufacturer. But it won’t be alone long; others including Toyota and Honda are working on plug-in hybrids, while Nissan is promising a pure electric in the same 2010-2011 time frame as the Volt launch.
The company is current testing the Volt's hybrid system in development mules built from its mid-size Malibu family sedan (the photos here show it with an Opel Vectra grille). GM reports that the system has reached its goal of providing a range of at least 40 miles in the pure electric mode. As the car moves closer to production, look to see future spy photos of the Volt in a 4-door hatchback body style similar to that seen on the concept.

New Bugatti will Debut in California

Bugatti are showing little restraint in their eagerness to specialize the Veyron. First we had the PurSang, then the Hermes and now the Sang Noir. It'€™s a darkened version with a completely black exterior.

Ralph Lauren was the first to blacken out his Veyron, but this edition goes much further. Like the Pur Sang, its central body panels are bare carbon fiber. Inside is a high-contrast tangerine interior with black-piano lacquer panels.

With three special edition Veyrons now in production, it'€™s clear that the original personalization program was far too limited. These few cars will set a standard that every owner will want.

Bugatti compare the new Sang Noir to the Type 57 Atlantic which was limited to a production of three examples. One of these sensational cars will debut at Pebble Beach later this year fresh from a Paul Russel restoration.

Bugatti is making a few changes when it comes to the new Veyron 16.4. They have use the design of the original Veyron – but have made some changes that we are less than happy about.

First of all Bugatti will only be producing 80 cars – which is a big difference from the 300 that they produced last time around. Yet, that isn’t the only thing that will be different. Because the new Veyron will not have a top the chassis will be bigger in order to make up for the loss of rigidity –which will in turn make it heaver.

Don’t even bother trying to test out the speed of the vehicle that top speed is only 217 and that is low when compared to many supercars. You can get yourself the new Veyron 16.4 for a whopping £900,000! Yep that’s right along with all of these changes they have also raised the price from £840,000.

2008 BMW M1 Concept

BMW ignited passion for its heritage by reincarnating the seminal M1. The new design was shown at a private party over the weekend to generate interest in the program. It was placed alongside an original M1 as well as the 1972 Turbo Concept.

Thirty years ago BMW boldly entered the supercar market with the M1. Being a production racing car, it was a huge leap forward in both engineering and style. Thus, the M1 became an icon of BMW performance in the seventies. But it also became a singularity, since the cars relatively poor performance in motor sport hindered the prospects for a successor.

Reviving names of past models and modernizing them for the current market is a delicate balance. Considerations have to be made for safety, increased performance and retro styling as well as keeping the dedicated enthusiasts onboard. BMW are no strangers to retro design, their revival of the Mini has been a large success. This is contrasted by the new one-series and their romantic comparison to the 2002. The latest name that faces BMW designers is the M1.

The scope of the new M1 project is uncertain, but BMW are dedicated enough to champion the new visual design. At the Villa d’Este Concours they showed a non-functional styling buck, with no engine and interior, but with working lights and steering.

Like the original, the new M1 project is sleek, wide and ahead of its time. The car is painted a brilliant hue of metallic bronze, just like the first M1 prototype of 1972.

The 2008 M1’s styling is a new direction for BMW and a departure from Chris Bangle’s flame surfacing that changed the entire BMW line. Now we have more purposeful lines, a void of extraneous curves and a more purposeful stance. BMW said this was a new direction that would trickle down to all BMW models.

When revealed to our photographer, Matteo TT Schucchi, his first impression was that “pictures can't really show the real presence, but it really is amazing, with some incredible lines, and definitely a great modern interpretation of the M1.”

Next week the car will be officially unveiled by Auto Bild and BMW themselves.

2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP

The 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP is going to be a lot like classic sports cars, but with a more modern look of course. The Solstice is created for the driver who absolutely loves great styling and a balanced performance. It was released at the 2008 New York Auto Show. They don’t expect to start production on this vehicle until sometime in 2008 and they say not to expect these Coupes in the Pontiac dealers until early 2009.

The Solstice is based on the convertible, and now they have designed it to perform in all weather and terrain. There is still an adjustable roof panel which opens up the roof and roadway to the driver and passengers of this luxury vehicle. The Solstice is the top selling roadster in the US right now and with this new release, it looks to further itself in the front of the pack.

This coupe comes with a 2.4L with 173HP as well as the GXP hoontastic 260HP 2.0L turbo mill. The Solstice will be sold for roughly $30,000 a piece and they look to sell out at that price. The official price hasn’t been determined yet, and one major setback is that the Solstice may not have any trunk space whatsoever. The release of this vehicle at the Auto Show was huge and it was even accompanied by 50 Cent, which must be great exposure for a car.

The Pontiac Solstice has been being hyped up for a little while now and a lot of people sure can’t wait for the actual release of this car to the general public. It will be in a reasonable price range and most people will be able to purchase this one for their collection. It’s a great collection piece for any sports enthusiast and I expect to see quite a few of these on the roads come 2009.

Pontiac G8 Sport Truck (2010)

For about the past twenty or so years the El Camino, which use to be oh so famous was basically extinct and you rarely ever seen one unless living out in the country somewhere. Although the new 2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Truck won’t have the official tag and stamp of the El Camino; it looks very similar in style apart from it being more modern looking. The Pontiac was unveil during the 2009 International New York Auto Show and it will be a long awaited entry to the market for some old-timer collectors out there, I can guarantee that.

This truck will be powered by a nice 6.0 Litre V8 engine and it will be able to output a solid 361HP. For a truck, 361HP is not bad, although it could be a bit better. This thing will definitely fly down the open road and the way it’s designed makes it look somewhat aerodynamic. It will only have the option of a six speed automatic transmission, so if you like manual you will need to settle for automatic, at least for the time being. The truck can hit 0-60Mph in just about 5.4 seconds which is about a half second quicker then most sports cars on the market right now. GM has done a lot of tweaks to the sport truck in order to get it prepared for the market and they have done a great job with this model and you should see good results.

The G8 will be able to carry over 1000 pounds in the back of the truck and also be able to tow roughly 3500 pounds, which means you can haul quite a bit with the sport truck. You wouldn’t think by appearance that it would be a strong as it is but it was made to be able to perform like any other truck while at the same time maintaining a sport feel to it.
