Peugeot earned its sporting name in the rather difficult worlds of rallying and touring cars as well as endurance racing. In the rally would the team made strong performance through the latter quarter of the 20th century but petered out in the new millennium with the 307 WRC not living up to the success of previous models. A similar story can be traced in touring car racing with the team once more suffering major issues with the 307 following some strong performances by the 406 coupe previously. The story is somewhat different in the endurance races with the team offering Audi stiff competition at the Le Mans 24 hour for the last couple of years.
Unfortunately this speed never really finds its way onto our roads for whilst the superminis such as the 206 offer a bit of zip for a small car, they are nothing compared to the Mercedes of even Audis of the world. That said, with the 206RC, Peugeot showed what they are capable of with a car that could reach 140mph after accelerating up to 62mpg from a standstill in only a little over 7 seconds.
